24 hours in Füssen – A Travel Guide for city trips near Munich

Only 1.5 hours drive from Munich, lies a picturesque city with many stories to tell named Füssen. A bus drive away from the famous Neuschwanstein Castle, Füssen is an idyllic location at the feet of the mountains. Here is a travel guide with what you need to know for a city trip near Munich – 24 hours in Füssen.

What to do

Visit the old city (Altstadt)

Here is what to expect in the old part of the city: traditionally painted buildings, monuments, fountains, an old castle, many lovely shops and restaurants to eat. Make sure you wander also on the backstreets to get away from the touristy vibes and have a short glimpse into the local life.

Take a walk to the uphill Castle – Hohes Schloss

A few minutes away from the old town and a tiny uphill walk, you will reach the castle. Open for tourists, it offers a beautiful view above the city. Take a walk in the inner courtyard or in the surroundings. The view is spectacular and it takes little effort to get there.

Where to stay

One of our favourite places to stay is Mang Maurus: a coquette guest house, family owned, right in the heart of the old town. Don’t forget to book breakfast too, it is generous and delicious. Parking places are complimentary and right in front of the location. This is a personal recommendation, choose whatever suits best your budget and travel style.

What to eat

A wide variety of local restaurants and traditional Bavarian cuisine can be found within walking distance throughout the city. Living already in Germany and being acquainted with the taste, we decided to choose this time more Asian flavours and went to Thuy Golden Stäbchen (Thuy Gold Chopsticks) and we were not disappointed. The food was as good as the reviews said it will be.

A very important lesson I’ve learned in our travels is that if you are in doubt about any place you want to eat, check out the reviews. They tell the truth and can be a very good guide in your decision-making.

Try something new and delicious

Brought to Füssen from its hometown Rottenburg o. Tauber, the Snowball Dream (Schneeballenträume) is a unique and delicious pastry. Very similar to biscuits, dry and with a hard consistency, it can be found in many flavours and varieties. Which one did you picked?

TIP 2 : Bring an umbrella

Füssen can have weather. Even if you start your day warm and sunny, by the afternoon it can pour. We were in total 3 times in Füssen and 2 out of 3 it was raining. Photo from our trip in February 2020.
