Happy Easter my beautiful friends to you and your families. Traditional Easter Eggs Decorating in Romania is a lovely tradition I’d like to write about. The egg decorating, like most customs, is done with a natural technique developed in the countryside using local resources. Our eggs were decorated in the village of Brazii, located in the western part of Romania. The village has no more than 50 houses, the city hall, a church, a basic shop and a doctor. Traditions here are kept very dear, thus we followed them strictly too.
TRADITIONAL EASTER EGGS DECORATING IN ROMANIA
WHAT YOU NEED
- fresh eggs
- nettles (natural green color)
- red onion shells (natural red color)
- non toxic string
- elastic Lycra fabric to wrap the eggs
- leaves and flowers you want to use as motives. ( Recommend: clover, parsley leaves or any other non toxic plant. We want to eat those eggs in the end!)
- cooking pot
- egg paint (optional)
If using nettles or onion shells for coloring is too complicated for you, just use regular egg paint. As background in Romania nettles are broadly used in the kitchen especially in spring. Delicious soups, stew or tea can be easily made out of them.
GRANDMA’S SECRET 1
To avoid cracked cooked egg shells: put them in cold salty water before you cook them.

PREPARATION
Get the fresh eggs and gently apply one motive leaf or flower of your choice. Fix the decorations with the Lycra fabric and secure it with the string, as shown in the photo above. After all your eggs are ready we will place half of them in the cooking pot together with the nettles and normally boil them for about 30 minutes. When they are ready, do the same with the other half and this time use the onion shells. When you use egg dye just boil them as long as it is written on the package.

GRANDMA’S SECRET 2
Use white vinegar when boiling the Easter eggs to fix the color better. This way the natural color sticks to egg and not to your hands. 😉

DISCLAIMER we used egg coloring too to obtain the strong colors.
Take the eggs out form the Lycra fabric and be amazed of your creation. All is left to do is to get a cute helper to assist you with the Easter basket decoration.
